Site #5 is a block west of the Police station, on the north (right) side. Site #5, the Hollenbeck Youth Center, 2015 E. First Street is where Olympic gold medal boxers Paul Gonzales (1984) and Oscar de la Hoya (1992) trained. Needless to say, countless other nameless boxing hopefuls trained here and elsewhere in Boyle Heights.

Former welterweight World Champ de la Hoya also founded the Oscar de la Hoya Boxing Youth Center at 114 S. Lorena Street, located in a former church, also in Boyle Heights. On the same block on the same side (north) of the street is Peoples’ History Tour Site #6. Site #6, is the Casa 0101 Theater, 2009 E. First Street, Los Angeles, CA 90033. (323) 263 7084. Josefina Lopez, Mexican writer of the play Real Women Have Curves and of the screenplay of the movie by the same name, founded this theater which runs writing and theater workshops for youth. Call the phone number above for program information as the theater is usually closed. |
